Public Speaking Study

As part of an ongoing line of research at the UvA Clinical Psychology Department, we are investigating a new treatment for students with fear of public speaking. This fear is common, but for some students it causes significant distress and presents a burden - for example, avoiding courses that involve presentations, or being extremely anxious in the build-up to a presentation. If you have a fear of speaking in public, this research may offer an opportunity to tackle this fear.

If you are interested in taking part in this study, you can register via the link below. As part of this screening, we ask for contact information so that we can contact you, as well as asking some questions about your fear. We will also ask some medical questions so that we can check whether the treatment is suitable for you. This questionnaire takes about 15 minutes and is completely free of obligation - you can always choose not to take part in the research even if you fill in the screener. For more information about the research you can read the page below.

For this research we are looking for students between 18 and 28 years old, who have a genuine fear of public speaking, and who are generally physically and mentally healthy. Participants must have a good command of English. We are currently only recruiting non-native speakers of English.

In this study we are assessing the efficacy of a new treatment for fear of speaking. During the research we will ask you to perform a short "public speaking task", after which you will be given the commonly used beta blocker propranolol (a small number of participants will receive a placebo pill). This treatment differs from both (1) standard behavioral therapy, where you are repeatedly exposed to your fear to gradually overcome your anxiety, and (2) traditional pharmacological treatments, where you take medicine every day.

During the study you will have to the UvA Roeterseiland campus (building G / L) two times. The first session will last about 3 hours and the second approximately one hour. A month after the last session, we will ask you to fill in a few follow-up questionnaires via email.

For your full participation in the study, you will receive a reimbursement of €40 or 4 participation points. We will also send a short questionnaire after three and six months, for which you will receive €5/0.5 points per questionnaire.
